1996: The planning of a joint library of three universities (University of Vaasa, Åbo Akademi University, Hanken School of Economics) begins
1998: An agreement on cooperation is signed
1999: The construction of the new library begins
2001: Tritonia Academic Library, the joint bilingual library and learning center of the University of Vaasa, Åbo Akademi University and Hanken School of Economics in Vaasa, opens on August 8, 2001 at Yliopistonranta 7. At the same time, the own libraries of the universities in Vaasa are closed. The new library serves around 6 000 students.
2004: The learning center provides its services to the three universities.
2006–2009: Merging the libraries of the universities of applied sciences to Tritonia is being planned.
2010: The libraries of Vaasa University of Applied Sciences VAMK and the Vaasa unit of Novia University of Applied Sciences are integrated to Tritonia. The technical libraries of the universities of applied sciences move to Yliopistonranta. EduLab (prev. learning center) provides its services to all five parties.
2011: Tritonia turns 10 years.
2013: Tritonia Allegro opens in Campus Allegro in Jakobstad.
2014: Rest of the library services of Novia University of Applied Sciences transfer to Tritonia.
2016: Tritonia turns 15 years
2017: Tritonia’s services in Vaasa are focused even more to Yliopistonranta when all teaching in the universities of applied sciences move to Palosaari. The library services of Novia University of Applied Sciences in Turku transfer to the library of Åbo Akademi University starting August 1, 2017. Tritonia has units in Vaasa and Pietarsaari and serves around 12 000 students. In December, Tritonia receives a great acknowledgement: the special collection of Åbo Akademi University, Vasa svenska lyceum library including Oskar Rancken’s collection, located in Tritonia is selected to UNESCO’s national Memory of the World Register.
2019: Hanken School of Economics in Vaasa leaves the Tritonia cooperation by the end of the year, and their collection is relocated to the Vaasa city library. Åbo Akademi University decides to set up their own library unit to their campus in Vaasa.
2020: Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, library services are restricted starting March. The use of online services grows. At the end of the year, Tritonia’s new service agreement between the universities operating in Palosaari is signed, and the planning of the renovation of the Luotsi building begins. Åbo Akademi University relocates its library services to Academill by the end of the year.
2021: Tritonia turns 20 years. The Tritonia cooperation includes University of Vaasa, VAMK and Novia. Tritonia has units in Vaasa and Jakobstad. EduLab’s services are transferred to other departments of the university.
2022: Tritonia Academic Library moves to the renovated Luotsi building. The new Tritonia opens on September 1. The library serves the higher education community of around 10 000 people (University of Vaasa, VAMK and Novia) in the Palosaari Campus. The library also has a unit in Jakobstad.
